Location Tracking

See where your moments happened

Time Memos can automatically attach your location to each memo, letting you see exactly where you were when you captured each moment. View all your memos on an interactive map with emoji markers, or explore the location of individual memos.

Enabling Location

Location attachment is controlled by the pin icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the memo list. When enabled (filled pin), your current location is automatically attached to new memos.

πŸ“

Enabled

New memos will include your current location automatically.

πŸ“/

Disabled

New memos will be created without location data.

Location Permission

The first time you enable location tracking, iOS will ask for permission to access your location. Time Memos only accesses your location when creating a new memoβ€”it does not track you in the background.

Privacy first: Location data is stored only on your device and in your personal iCloud account. It is never shared with third parties.

Viewing on Map

Time Memos offers two ways to view your memos on a map: a full map view of all memos and an expanded view for individual memo locations.

All Items Map View

Tap the map icon in the toolbar to switch to the All Items Map view. This displays all your memos that have locations as emoji markers on an interactive map.

  • Emoji markers: Each memo appears as its emoji on the map
  • Tap to select: Tap any marker to see a card with the memo details
  • Count indicator: Shows how many memos have locations
  • Zoom and pan: Navigate the map to explore different areas

Selected Memo Card

When you tap a marker on the map, a card appears showing the memo's emoji, label, timestamp, and location. Tap the card to open the full memo details.

Single Memo Map

Open any memo with a location and tap the map thumbnail to expand it to a full map view. This shows exactly where that memo was captured.

Open in Apple Maps

From any memo's expanded map view, tap "Open in Maps" to launch Apple Maps with the location. This is useful for getting directions or exploring the area further.

Filtering by Location

Use the filter options to show only memos with or without locations:

  • All: Show all memos regardless of location
  • Has Location: Show only memos with location data
  • No Location: Show only memos without location data

Location in Exports

When you export your memos, location data is included based on the format:

Text Export

Location appears as a readable address or coordinates below each memo entry.

β˜• Coffee break
10:30 AM Β· Jan 15
πŸ“ Blue Bottle Coffee, SoMa

JSON Export

Full location data including coordinates and display text.

"location": {
  "text": "Blue Bottle Coffee",
  "lat": 37.7749,
  "lon": -122.4194
}

Settings

Configure location behavior in Time Memos settings:

  • Attach Location to New Memos: Sets the default state of the location toggle. When enabled, the pin icon will be active by default when you open the app.

Tips

Toggle quickly

Tap the pin icon in the toolbar to quickly enable or disable location for your next memo. The setting persists until you change it again.

Add location later

You can't add location to a memo after creation, but you can note the location in the memo's label if you forgot to enable it.

Battery friendly

Time Memos only checks your location briefly when creating a memo. It does not use continuous background location tracking.

Cluster dense areas

If you have many memos in the same area (like your home or office), zoom in on the map to see individual markers more clearly.
